The St. Macartan’s College Dalton Cup team made it two wins out of two in this year’s to ensure qualification to the knock-out stages of the competition. ‘The Sem’ prevailed in a topsy-turvey goal fest encounter, beating St. Pius X Magherafelt by 5-7 to 5-4!! It was not a game for the faint-heartened as goal was followed by goal in a game played in MUSA, Cookstown. St. Macartan’s started brightly registering a point from full-forward Sean Grant. This was built upon a minute later when Michael McAlister of Emyvale struck for his first goal. However, a mix-up in the Sem defence five minutes later ensured parity between the sides as Magherafelt scored their first goal.
St. Macartan’s regrouped and with great intensity, dynamism and effort the team scored three goals through Kalum McKenna, Sean Grant and Michael Mc Alister, however at the same time they also leaked three goals in a tit for tat contest. At half-time ‘The Sem’ led 4-4 to 4-2. This allowed the management team of Garrett Coyle, Declan Brennan and Marty Corey address a few issues. The 2nd half proved to be a much tighter affair with defence’s stepping up to the plate. Early points were exchanged before St. Macartan’s scored their next major of the game with Dean McDonnell of Clontibret calmly converting a penalty after excellent work from his club-mate DeanMcGuigan. This score put ‘The Sem’ in a comfortable position and complete control of the game. In an outstanding defensive display in the second half, St. Macartan’s College, denied Magherafelt a score for 32minutes before conceding a goal from a free with the last kick of the game. They still have Ulster Colleges Kingpins St. Patricks Maghera and St. Mary’s Magherafelt to play before their quarter-final game in two weeks time.
