St. Macartan’s College Basketball

The 2014/15 schools basketball season is well and truly underway with St. Macartan’s College starting the season in convincing fashion. As the only Co. Monaghan school playing in the ‘A’ division their opponents this year include Malachy’s Belfast, Cnoc Mhuire Granard, St. Joesph’s Drogheda and St. Mary’s Drogheda. St. Macartan’s has also entered the National Cup Competition.

So far the u-19’s have beaten Granard and St. Joesph’s Drogheda in the league with a defeat against St. Malachy’s Belfast. The u-16’s have played three and won but suffered a narrow defeat to Malahide Community School in the National Cup. This may be seen as a ‘moral victory’ as Malahide were beaten All-Ireland finalists in both 1st and 2nd Year. The u-19’s face St. Paul’s Raheny in the quater-final of the National Cup next Friday 14th November, which will be a daunting task but one the team are looking forward to.

Under the tutelage of team coaches Garrett Coyle and Enda O’ Brien, basketball in St. Macartan’s continues to go from strength to strength. The u-19’s are backboned by members of the u-16 All-Ireland winning team of 2011, Richard Wilkie, Ramunas Ramunskas, Mantas Zalikas and Andrius Justamunas. The u-16’s have qualified for the last two All-Ireland finals with players like point guard Robbie McAlister and Michael O’ Brien with Ireland trialists Andrew O’ Connor and Killian McAdam having a huge influence.
