Injury time drama in MacRory play-off
Danske Bank MacRory Cup elimination tie
in Gavaghey : St Macartan’s, Monaghan 4-4 St Michael’s, Lurgan 3-6
EIMHIN Morahan was the hero for St Macartan’s, Monaghan in a remarkable Danske Bank MacRory Cup eliminator in Garvaghey yesterday afternoon.
The Sem had failed to score in the whole of the second half until injury time and had seen their interval lead of 3-3 to 2-1 overturned and St Michael’s, Lurgan seemingly on their way to a quarter-final play-off with holders St Patrick’s, Maghera.
Then Morahan put a free over in the first minute of injury time to narrow the gap to 3-6 to 3-4. Two minutes later he was ready to pull the trigger when a Lurgan defender came across with a foot block and conceded a penalty.
Morahan coolly slotted the spot-kick wide of the keeper and into the corner of the net for the winning score with the referee’s whistle greeting the kick-out.
The Sem looked the more composed team in the first half and goals in the 15th and 18th minutes from wing half back Niall Kearns opened up a gap.
Adam Kelly and Conor McConville came back with goals for Lurgan, but a goal right on half time from Leonard McDermott put St Macartan’s back in control.
Amazingly they failed to score for the first 30 minutes of the second half and a goal from Shayne Lavery tied the teams after 45 minutes.
Conor P McConville brought his tally to four points soon after and Mícheál McKenna added a 45 to open up a three point gap, before that late, late sting in the tail

St Michael’s : Shayne Lavery 1-0, Adam Kelly 1-0, Conor McConville 1-0, Conor P McConville 0-4, Mícheál McKenna 0-1, Eunan Walsh 0-1.
