Transition Year Musical The Addams Family 2017
Sem Goes Paranormal with Addams Family the Musical
St Macartan’s College Transition Year students presented the very ambitious musical comedy the Addams Family over four nights in October 2017 at the Sem theatre.
With music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa the show is based upon The Addams Family characters created by Charles Addams in his cartoons which depict a ghoulish American family with an affinity for all things macabre. Although numerous film and television adaptations of Addams’ cartoons exist, the musical is the first stage show based on the characters and only recently staged in Ireland. Putting an unknown musical on stage is ambitious and not without risks, however, once again a St. Macartan’s College cast left audiences spellbound and tremendously entertained for the show’s duration.
This show will be remembered for the outstanding performances by the lead characters in particular Evan Meighan who was simply outstanding as Gomez and the equally impressive Brian McAteer as Morticia. Evan and Brian have developed their acting skills with Monaghan Youth Theatre and their stage presence and natural acting and singing ability added so much to the show’s success.
Nevin Fowler was a superb Fester while Macdara Treanor was a more than very credible Wednesday. Luke Treanor and Jakub Fryzlewicz shared the role of Pugsley Addams and both in their own way added a lot to the show. Paul Corrigan and Damien Treanor also shared a role. This time as Grandma. Both played the role excellently. Conor McCooey was hilarious as Lurch while new to the stage Brian Macklin, Dean Murphy and Conall McHugh performed more than admirably in their respective roles as Mal, Alice and Lucas.
The school’s junior choir provided excellent vocal backing while the ancestors Ben Ryan, Harry Mallen, Ryan Harnett, Cathal Meehan, Dean Steenson, Darren Treanor, Mikey Carville, Caomhán Woods, Terence McDonald, Nathan Mc Cabe, Aoghán Smyth and Michael Meehan were simply hilarious.
The St. Macartan’s adaptation of the Addams Family was produced by Ms. Catherine Mulhern assisted by Mr.Vincent Lee, Mr. Fergal McDonald, Ms.Marion McDonald and Ms. LInda Walsh Fitzgerald.Choreography was by Ms. Fiona Keenan O’Brien. Stage management was by Dillon McCaffrey and Conor Mulligan. Set design was by Ms. Fionnuala Finnegan, Mr. David Shevlin and Ms.Clare McKenna assisted by Janek Michaelis, Lee Treanor, Jack Rooney and Jamie McPhillips, Niall Corrigan, Shane McEneaney and Paul McPhillips. Sound and lighting was by Vincent Macklin and Panic Hire assisted by Sem students Paddy Kelly and Stephen McMahon
Fear an tí for the four nights was Christopher Flood who was warm in his praise each night for his fellow students who worked behind the scenes each night, the shows generous sponsors and for the Northern Standard newspaper and Northern Sound radio who helped publicise the show in the weems leading up to the sellout run.
