Our Green-Schools Journey 2025 - 2026

Our Green Schools Committee was established by Mr P West, initially with 4th year volunteer students and begins to scope the activities and initiatives for the year ahead and beyond.

Litter management is the prescribed theme of year one and we met each month to plan and review our progress. We reached out to Monaghan County Council’s Litter & Environment officer Mr Noel Corley who supplied us with bags and pickers and collected our waste each term. Our school has never had a green flag so we have had a clear goal from day one and we expanded our reach as the year progressed.

Daffodil Planting

Daffodil Planting to improve amenity and for use on daffodil day by Crocus Charity once established.

Term 1 Batteries for Barretstown

Recycling batteries campaign for Barretstown which supports children recovering from cancer. The charity collected in late May 26, and by this time, with numerous appeals including after Christmas where each student took a recycling bag home we had filled all our tubes.

Return Recycle Scheme for Zambia

Our Green Schools Committee took charge of the recycling for Zambia project, where we highlighted the charity and physically recycled the bottles half-termly. All of the money collected through this scheme is going to our school in Zambia project.

Term 2
Plastic Free Campaign.

In term 2, our Green Schools team adapted a bespoke plastic-reduction campaign suited to our school’s needs.

GREEN SCHOOLS PLASTIC FREE CAMPAIGN:
We encourage you to;

  1. Invest in a reusable METAL water bottle.
  2. Use a lunch box instead of cling film or plastic bags.
  3.  Encourage friends and family to go plastic free.

Term 2
Art Competition

Supporting our students to buy into our Green Schools objectives. All of the entries went on display for six weeks in the school social area to raise awareness.

Term 2

Recruitment drive

we expanded our committee to 31 students with the recruitment of students from 1st and 2nd year by our Green Schools team. These new members were invaluable in helping maintain our drive as Ty went on work experience and were tied up in the school musical and International trips. This helped keep the focus firmly on year 1 main objective which is litter management.

In late term 2

Polytunnel

We formed a partnership with Monaghan Integrated Partnership, an organisation that provides services to asylum seekers in the local community. We teamed up with them to dig out the foundations for our new school polytunnel over two months.
Our Ty Green school students worked with the men each Wednesday morning. With the foundation completed in late May, we plan to erect the Polytunnel in September 26.

Term 3

National River Survey

We took part in an An Taisce National rivers survey where we surveyed the Blackwater river as it passes the front of our school. We found the Blackwater had a very low level of pollution and
Nitrates in particular while the “Kick” sample showed a thriving Fauna ecosystem..

Term 3

Clothes Collection to aid the Zambia

Clothes Collection to aid the Zambia project and the development of outdoor recreation facilities. We had a huge success with our clothes recycling scheme.
The proceeds were split evenly between our Zambia project and developing an outdoor soccer court, and
five basketball areas.

Term 3
